World Cup hero Olga Carmona found out that her father had passed away shortly after her crucial goal.

However it’s since been confirmed by the Royal Spanish Football Federation that the left-back had been told of her father’s death after the match.

A statement from the RFEF (Spanish FA) said: “The @RFEF deeply regrets to report the death of Olga Carmona’s father.

“The soccer player learned the sad news after the World Cup final.

“We send our most sincere hugs to Olga and her family in a moment of deep pain.

“We love you, Olga, you are the history of Spanish football.”

The 23-year-old’s goal came midway through the first as her goal led La Roja to victory and ended the Lionesses dream of securing football’s ultimate crown.

Carmona dedicated her match-winning strike to the mother of a friend who had passed away, with the defender sharing the message ‘Merchi’, which was printed on her undershirt.
