Why Arsenal will pin hopes on Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Jesus to end six-year spell of torrid form at Goodison Park

Arsenal will be having flashbacks to recent defeats at Goodison Park as they travel to face Everton once again this weekend. 

The Gunners have started the Premier League season well and are heading to Merseyside following an impressive late win over Manchester United.

But as their fans travel up north, they will be reminded of their side’s previous results away at the Toffees under Mikel Arteta. 

Everton have won four of the last five meetings between the two sides at Goodison Park with Arsenal not claiming three points in the clash since 2017. 

The most recent of the Gunners’ defeats was on Sean Dyche’s first game in charge of the Toffees as James Tarkowski headed in the only goal.

Dyche’s side will be eyeing another three points in this game to give their campaign a much-needed boost. 

And if they do so, it will be the first time Everton have won four consecutive home games against Arsenal in over 100 years. 

However, it is going to be an extremely tough task with both teams experiencing opposite starts to the season. 

Arteta’s side are unbeaten in their opening four while the Toffees have lost all but one. 

And the Gunners have a lot more firepower in their line-up with two stars expected to make the difference this weekend.

Captain Martin Odegaard is one of those stars as he loves playing away from home. 

Since the start of last season, only Erling Haaland (17) and Harry Kane (16) have scored more Premier League away goals than Odegaard’s 10.  

In fact for Arsenal, only Andrey Arshavin (56.5 per cent) has a higher percentage of goals coming in away games than the Norweigan does (56 per cent). 

In total, Odegaard has scored 14 of his 25 goals for the club on the road and he will be looking to add another on Sunday afternoon. 

The other major threat for Everton to deal with is Gabriel Jesus.

The Toffees will have nightmares of the Brazilian who has scored eight goals in only nine appearances against them in the Premier League.

Jesus has actually netted more times against Everton than any other opponent in the top-flight. 

He averages a goal every 71 minutes and boasts the best rate of any player to play 500 or more minutes against the Merseyside club. 

So Arteta may opt to hand his striker a start at Goodison Park to make use of his incredible record. 

But Eddie Nketiah has led the line so far this campaign with Jesus recovering from his injury so the Brazilian may have to get his obligatory goal off the bench.
