‘What an incredible journey’ – Alessia Russo’s brother posts heartwarming message after England World Cup final defeat

England’s World Cup heroes have been told they have once again ‘done their country proud’ following their final heartbreak.

The Lionesses defied the odds to reach the final despite missing a number of key players, but ultimately came up short after losing 1-0 to Spain.

Sarina Wiegman’s side were reduced to tears at Sydney’s Stadium Australia, but can take solace in the fact that they continue to inspire millions back in Blighty.

And Alessia Russo’s brother Giorgio has been quick to praise the Arsenal forward, who scored three goals in the tournament Down Under.

Giorgio shared a number of snaps on social media of him alongside the 24-year-old, where he posted a heartwarming message to the Lionesses.

In an Instagram statement, brother Giorgio said: “What a incredible journey it’s been the last month.

“These Lionesses have been on some journey, they have once again brought a whole nation together and done their whole country so proud.

“To come off the back of winning the Euros last year and then finishing second in the World Cup is remarkable.

“I am so proud to have been able to be in Australia with my family to watch my sister compete at the highest level and I am so proud of you Alessia Russo.”

He added: “I’m sure this team will be back stronger than ever fighting for more trophies on the world stage.”

It is a view shared by England defender Millie Bright, who was left in a flood of tears as a result of the defeat.

She told ITV: “A lot of emotion. Really proud of this team to come this far and to play in a World Cup final, not may players do that.“It’s tough to take.

“I don’t think there’s much you can say at the minute. Emotions are high.

“Huge amount of disappointment. At first you feel you’ve failed, you’ve not won.

“But to still come second, in a couple of weeks when it settles I think we’ll be really proud.

“This is not it for us. We’ll bounce back I’m sure but for now it’s hard to take.”
