Tottenham close to sealing deal for defender and Liverpool target Micky Van de Ven
Tottenham Hotspur is reportedly close to securing a deal with Wolfsburg to sign defender Micky Van de Ven. The team’s defensive struggles last season, conceding 68 goals in the Premier League, have prompted them to seek reinforcements. Van de Ven, who has represented the Netherlands national team at the U21 level, seems poised to make a move to the Premier League.
Under new manager Ange Postecoglou, rectifying the defensive issues is a priority for Spurs. While they have already made attacking signings in James Maddison and Manor Solomon, they have also brought in Guglielmo Vicario as a new goalkeeping option, as Hugo Lloris is looking to leave the club.
With the new season just around the corner, Tottenham could finally be on the verge of signing a new defender. Although the deal is close to completion, an official announcement may not happen immediately.
Van de Ven, 22, has spent two seasons at Wolfsburg, making 41 appearances across all competitions. He has kept 14 clean sheets and possesses the versatility to play at both left and center-back positions.
If the deal goes through, Spurs will beat out other Premier League clubs, including Liverpool, who were previously linked with Van de Ven. Personal terms have already been agreed upon, indicating that the signing is nearing completion.
In addition to Van de Ven, Tottenham has also shown interest in Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba as they continue to strengthen their defensive options.
Before the start of the new campaign, Van de Ven could potentially join in the pre-season action as Spurs face Shakhtar Donetsk and Barcelona in their final friendly matches.
Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly close to sealing a deal for Micky Van de Ven, a much sought-after defender amongst Premier League clubs.
The30-year old Dutch defender has been a long-term target of Tottenham’s, and other interested clubs – including Liverpool – were thought to be vying for his signature.
Van de Ven currently plays for Feyenoord in the Netherlands and has a wealth of experience, playing around 200 games in the Eredivisie. He has won three league titles and one cup in his career and is an established figure at the Dutch top flight.
With Tottenham’s focus having shifted towards the acquisition of much sought-after defenders, they have now reportedly gained the upper hand in the pursuit of the Dutch captain.
The player himself is thought to be intrigued by the club’s challenge of the Champions League, and with an absurdly attractive contract on the table from Spurs, his future with the Londoners appears to have been decided.
Should the move be finalized, the centre back is expected to sign a four-year contract in which he would be expected to improve Tottenham’s defensive prowess.
Although nothing has been confirmed yet, Tottenham’s strong pursuit of the player over recent weeks suggests that an agreement could be reached any time soon.
It is yet to be seen whether Van de Ven will remain a Feyenoord player or make the move to the Premier League, but all eyes are now on Tottenham as the transfer window draws to a close.
