Tino Livramento to Newcastle ‘close’ as Southampton boss Russell Martin confirms medical ahead of £40million move

Russell Martin, the Southampton boss, has confirmed that Tino Livramento’s move from Southampton to Newcastle is nearing completion. Livramento, a 20-year-old right-back, was not included in Southampton’s squad for their Championship opener against Sheffield Wednesday. He is on the verge of returning to the Premier League as Newcastle has agreed to a £40 million deal, which includes add-ons. Livramento had limited game time last season due to an ACL injury but impressed during his time at Southampton. His former club, Chelsea, will also receive 50% of the transfer fee. Martin revealed that Livramento is scheduled to undergo a medical with Newcastle. He praised Livramento’s talent and wished him the best for his future.

In addition to Livramento, James Ward-Prowse and Romeo Lavia are also rumored to be leaving Southampton this summer. West Ham’s £30 million bid for Ward-Prowse has been rejected, while Liverpool’s second offer for Lavia, valued at £50 million, has also been turned down.

Saints’ boss Russell Martin has confirmed that Tino Livramento’s transfer to Newcastle United is close and that the young fullback is set to undergo a medical ahead of a proposed £40million move.

The Portuguese international’s move to the North East comes after weeks of speculation and has been viewed as a large coup for the Magpies, who are eager to build a team which can compete in the upper echelons of the Premier League.

Livramento has enjoyed a sensational season with Southampton, even receiving an international call-up in April, and has been the subject of much transfer speculation in recent months. This marks the first major outlay of the window by the Magpies, and the Tyneside club is seemingly increasingly determined to make a statement of intent in the English top flight.

Livramento came through the youth ranks of Benfica and was signed by Saints back in 2019. He has enjoyed two impressive seasons for the team from the South Coast and racked up 42 Premier League appearances for The Saints.

The Verdict

Tino Livramento has the potential to be a top Premier League defender and could be the ideal replacement for the recently released Jetro Willems if Newcastle can close the deal. The hotly anticipated move from St Mary’s to St James’ Park has the potential to see the Magpies drastically improving their backline with one of Europe’s most promising fullbacks.
