Spain v England preview
Sarina Wiegman’s England side broke the hearts of host nation Australia in Wednesday’s second semi final to reach their first ever Women’s World Cup final.
Ella Toone, Lauren Hemp and Alessio Russo scored the goals to give the Lionesses a 3-1 win to leave the European champions just 90 minutes away from becoming champions of the world.
Wednesday’s performance was arguably England’s most impressive throughout the tournament, picking up momentum at the perfect time ahead of Sunday’s final.
The Lionesses progressed through a group containing Haiti, Denmark and China, winning all three games, not always convincingly, before knocking out Nigeria on penalties and Colombia in the last eight ahead of their victory over co-hosts Australia on Wednesday.
Spain have also reached the final for the very first time in their history, in fact La Roja had never won a World Cup knockout match prior to this year’s competition.
Jorge Vilda has a lot of the recently all-conquering Barcelona side, who have won two of the last three Champions Leagues, reaching the final of the other, to pick from, seven of which started their semi final victory over Sweden.
La Roja scored two late goals, the first by Salma Paralluelo, followed by an 89th minute winner from Olga Carmona after the Swedes thought they’d sent the tie to extra time having equalised in the 88th minute.
The win over Sweden followed a 2-1 extra time victory over the Netherlands in the last eight and a comfortable 5-1 win over Switzerland in their first knockout game.
The Spanish started the group stage well, winning their opening matches 3-0 against Costa Rica and 5-0 against Zambia, before they fell to an unexpected 4-0 defeat to Japan in their final match which meant they finished second in Group D.
England and Spain met in last year’s Euros at the quarter final stage in which the Lionesses, as hosts progressed after an extra time winner from Georgia Stanway.
The Lionesses lead the overall head-to-head record against Spain by seven wins to three, thought the last three meetings have seen one win for each nation and a draw in the other match.
Spain v England betting tips
England put in perhaps their best performance of the tournament on Wednesday in their semi final victory over Croatia, winning both halves, and punters can get tempting odds of 39/4 for the Lionesses to do the same in Sunday’s final.
England’s star of the group stage, Lauren James, will be back and available for the Lionesses having sat out her two match suspension for picking up a red card against Nigeria in the Round of 16.
The Chelsea star scored three and assisted three in the group stage for England, and still leads both tallies for the Lionesses ahead of the final.
talkSPORT BET are offering 5/1 odds for James to find the back of the net on her return to the squad and England to win in 90 minutes.
