Sofyan Amrabat’s moment of the World Cup was tackle on Kylian Mbappe that had fans celebrating like it was a goal

If Manchester United are looking for added steel in their midfield then Sofyan Amrabat might just be the perfect signing.

The Red Devils have approached Fiorentina about taking midfielder Sofyan Amrabat on loan, talkSPORT understands, with a move increasingly likely to be done before Friday’s 11pm deadline.

While also being a top-level technician, the 27-year-old’s performances at the World Cup showed that he’s a player who clearly means business.

Morocco were the surprise package of last year’s tournament in Qatar with the African nation making it all the way to the semi-finals of the competition.

It was there that they faced France but endured a torrid start after going 1-0 down thanks to a Theo Hernandez effort after just five minutes.

The last thing that Morocco needed was a rapid Kylian Mbappe haring after the ball with the chance to make it 2-0 and effectively ending any hopes of progressing to the biggest match in football.

Discussing the tackle with The Athletic, Amrabat said: “You can see from the way I ran, and you can see from my face, that I put everything into that sprint.

“Everybody knows what a fantastic player he is and how fast he is. And he was gone!

“It was 1-0 and I knew if they made it 2-0 the game was finished.

“We were so near the final. So, yes, I put everything I had into that sprint.

“That tackle, it was the only way to stop him. It was the perfect tackle. And then I heard the stadium roar. People were celebrating like it was a goal.”

The tackle was hailed by fans as the “best moment of the World Cup” and “tackle of the tournament”, with Moroccan journalist Amine El Amri describing him as ‘a raging bull’.

Al Amri told talkSPORT at the time: “I think he’s a fantastic player. His brother is Nordin Amrabat, and I’m sure you guys saw in Russia that this guy was a raging bull.

“But Sofyan Amrabat is a great footballer in addition to being a raging bull.

“I’m trying to be as objective as I can but I think he’s been the best midfielder in this World Cup.

“I have nothing but respect for guys like Luka Modric, Marcelo Brozovic and Rodrigo De Paul and many others but I think he’s been absolutely the best player in midfield in this World Cup.”

Amrabat joined current club Fiorentina in 2020 and has gone on to make 107 appearances for the Italian side, scoring one goal.
