‘Sell Harry Kane, we’ve got Oliver Skipp’ – Tottenham fans joke after midfielder scores twice at Barcelona

Oliver Skipp showcased his skills with two impressive goals, reminiscent of Harry Kane’s finishes, to help Tottenham come from behind and take the lead against Barcelona. Although the Joan Gamper Trophy is considered a friendly match, Spurs fans were concerned about a potential humiliation before the start of the season when Robert Lewandowski scored for Barca in the third minute.

However, Skipp’s brace turned the game around for Ange Postecoglou’s team. The midfielder equalized on the rebound after Ivan Perisic’s scuffed effort hit the post. Skipp’s second goal was even more remarkable, as he leapt like a salmon and headed the ball past Marc-Andre ter Stegen from a cross on the left.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Harry Kane’s future at the club, with links to Bayern Munich, some fans couldn’t help but joke that Postecoglou can rely on Skipp and doesn’t need Kane. They expressed their excitement about Skipp’s brilliance and even suggested selling Kane because of Skipp’s impressive performance.

In Tuesday night’s clash, Kane was not included in the lineup as Postecoglou chose to rest several key players, including James Maddison, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and Cristian Romero.

talkSPORT understands that Spurs are not overly concerned about Kane’s future, despite Bayern’s persistent efforts to sign him. Bayern is reportedly preparing a fourth bid of around £94 million, while the Premier League club values Kane at £100 million.

The days of the ‘one-club’ player may be over but even in the hustle and bustle of the modern game, loyalty and tradition still count for something at Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham fans were wowed this week by the performance of homegrown talent Oliver Skipp in the Spanish sun. The 19-year-old put in a remarkable two-goal display during their pre-season glamour tie against Spanish giants Barcelona. Indeed it was a performance fit for any member of Spurs’ star-studded forward line.

In the face of such a mature display, the fans took to social media to show their appreciation with a cheeky joke directed towards Spurs’ talisman, Harry Kane.

One Twitter user wrote: “Sell Harry Kane, we’ve got Oliver Skipp’ – a tongue-in-cheek response from the Spurs faithful to the teen’s stunning performance and to the club’s long-term captain’s struggles during pre-season.

The loss of club captain and record goal scorer Kane could be a catastrophic one for Spurs, however for one night at least, Skipp managed to fill the England international’s boots as he struck two excellent goals and put in a commanding display as a box-to-box midfielder.

He has already caught the eye this pre-season with a series of impressive displays and his two-goal salvo against Barca was the pinnacle of this and a moment of real pride for both Skipp and the club.

The Spur’s boss, Mauricio Pochettino, has spoken highly of Skipp in recent weeks and suggested he could be one of the next generation of Spurs players to break into the first team. With this kind of performance, there’s no doubting his potential to do just that.

Skipp’s display against Barcelona showed that quality can come in all shapes and sizes and he could be the first of a new wave of Spurs talent. The future certainly looks bright for this talented young man.
