Republic of Ireland fans chant Lionel Messi’s name during defeat to France while one supporter parades shirt
The Republic of Ireland were unable to get a result in their Euro 2024 qualifier against France, but the travelling fans made some cheeky jokes throughout.
Goals from Aurelien Tchouameni and Marcus Thuram sealed the victory for the two-time European champions at the Parc des Princes on Thursday night.

But it was a routine victory for FranceGetty
Stephen Kenny’s men gave a decent account of themselves, but a France side containing stars including Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann were simply too much for them.
But that didn’t dim the mood of the Ireland fans, who poked fun at the France players and fans throughout the match.
They were heard chanting the name of Lionel Messi in reference to Les Bleus’ defeat to Argentina at the World Cup final in Qatar.
Meanwhile, one fan was pictured holding an Argentina shirt with Messi‘s name on the back.

It does appear France will have the last laugh though with the result leaving them top of Group B with a maximum 15 points.
Meanwhile, Ireland’s chances of qualifying for next summer’s tournament in Germany are remote having amassed just three points from four matches. They are fourth in the group, only above minnows Gibraltar.
The other match in the group saw the Netherlands, who are second in the group, ease to a 3-0 win at home to Greece.
