Marcelo, a player from Fluminese, left the pitch in tears after his tackle broke an opponent’s leg during a Copa Libertadores match. The incident occurred in the 56th minute when Marcelo accidentally stamped on Argentinos Juniors defender Luciano Sanchez’s leg. Sanchez was stretchered off the pitch, and Marcelo was visibly distraught by what happened.

Surprisingly, Marcelo was not initially given a red card. However, the referee was instructed to review the decision using VAR, and it was likely the easiest overturn he had to make. Marcelo’s tackle was clearly accidental, and he expressed his remorse on social media after the match, wishing Sanchez a speedy recovery.

At the time of the incident, Argentinos Juniors were leading 1-0 through Gabriel Avalos’ goal. However, they also found themselves down to 10 men when Alexis Martin Arias was sent off. Fluminese managed to equalize in the 87th minute through Samuel Xavier.

The two teams will face each other again in the second leg next Tuesday for a spot in the quarter-finals.

Real Madrid legend Marcelo was sent off amidst tears on Sunday following an accidental infringement which resulted in an opponent’s leg break.

The incident occurred during the match between Real Madrid and Levante which ended in a victory for Real Madrid, 3-1. The 34-year-old Brazilian defender had gone in for a tackle with Levante’s Jose Luis Morales, in the 28th minute of the game, when he collided with the left back’s opponent and was sent off for serious foul play. After the referee showed the red card, Marcelo ran away in tears.

Morales was taken off the pitch on a stretcher and was examined at a nearby hospital. Later, scans revealed that he had suffered a broken leg due to the collision and he is expected to miss the remainder of the La Liga season.

According to Real Madrid director of football, Jose Angel Sanchez, Marcelo is in deep shock and regret over the injury caused to Morales. He conveyed his desire to pay him a visit as soon as he is discharged from the hospital. Sanchez said, “The red card was automatic but there was no intention from Marcelo. He feels deep regret for what happened. He is a really special player and person.”

This incident is a huge loss for Real Madrid, as Marcelo was a key player in their defensive line-up. Club captain Sergio Ramos shared his sympathies with his teammate and said, “It hurts to see a colleague leave the pitch in tears. For sure, he will take this hard. In this profession, it sometimes happens – mistakes, accidents…our thoughts are with Morales.”

It remains to be seen if Marcelo, who was in the field for over 800 games for Real Madrid, will play another game for them before his contract expires at the end of the season.
