Mason Mount misses ‘sitter’ as Andre Onana chipped from halfway line as Manchester United signings make nightmare Old Trafford debut

Manchester United’s summer signings Mason Mount and Andre Onana had a difficult start to their Old Trafford debut. The Red Devils were facing Lens in their penultimate pre-season fixture before the 2023/24 season began. The atmosphere was buzzing at Old Trafford after the unveiling of new £72m striker Rasmus Hojlund. However, Mount and Onana didn’t have the best of starts in front of their home fans.

Mount, who was signed from Chelsea for £55 million, had a golden opportunity to put his side 1-0 up. Bruno Fernandes played a brilliant pass to Alejandro Garnacho on the left wing, who then found Mount in front of an open goal. Unfortunately, Mount scuffed his shot and the ball ended up going backwards and out of danger.

Meanwhile, Onana, who was signed for £47 million, was left stunned as Lens’ Florian Sotoca spotted him off his line. After a misplaced pass from Diogo Dalot in the United back line, Sotoca seized the opportunity and attempted to chip the goalkeeper from the halfway line. Onana tried his best to track back and save the shot, but he ended up in the net alongside the ball, giving Lens the lead.

Despite these slip-ups, it’s important to remember that it is still pre-season. However, fans on Twitter were surprised by the mistakes made by Mount and Onana. One supporter mentioned that rival fans would make a big deal out of their errors.

Manchester United’s defence were caught napping on Wednesday night as Mason Mount missed what should have been the easiest goal of his career in a 2-1 victory for Chelsea. With the score at 0-0, Andre Onana carried the ball from his own penalty area to the hole line, then chipped it over David De Gea and into the empty net. Mount was late to react and failed to score what would have been a sensational goal.

Both of Manchester United’s January signings, Bruno Fernandes and Odion Ighalo, made their Old Trafford debuts but it was a night to forget, as Fernandes had a penalty saved by Onana in the first half.

The visitors took the lead when Kurt Zouma glanced in from a corner kick. A piece of sublime skill from Anthony Martial to create Daniel James’ equaliser saw the home side back on level terms.

The game seemed destined to end in a draw, until Onana’s audacious effort decided it. Mount had been impressive in the first half and came close to giving his side the lead when he blasted wide from close range. Unfortunately his luck ran out and his failure to put away the ‘sitter’ meant United ended up empty-handed.

Chelsea leapfrogged their opponents into fourth place in the Premier League table and look to have a real chance not only of Champions League qualification, but of really challenging at the top of the table.

Meanwhile, this result highlights the need for Manchester United to address their defensive woes, as well as the need for further quality additions to their attack. It certainly wasn’t the dream debut for Fernandes and Ighalo as they showed signs of promise, but it was ultimately a disappointing evening for the Red Devils.
