Manchester United’s reasons behind decision to delay announcement on Mason Greenwood’s future

Manchester United won’t announce their plans for Mason Greenwood until they have consulted their women’s players, talkSPORT understands.

This is due to a number of their stars being at the Women’s World Cup, meaning that a decision may not be announced until late next week.

Greenwood recently returned to training on his own where he was seen putting himself through the paces in a public park.

The 21-year-old striker has not featured for United since he was arrested in January 2022 over allegations of assault and rape.

Greenwood denied all offences against him, but was suspended by the club pending their own internal investigation.

Since then, all charges against Greenwood were dropped in February 2023 with the Crown Prosecution Service saying: “A combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction.”

United were expected to make a decision on Greenwood’s involvement under Erik ten Hag before the Premier League season got underway.

They face Wolves at Molineux on Monday night – a clash that is exclusively live on talkSPORT.

However that’s now unlikely to be the case with United keen to take their time over a decision that requires careful consideration.

A group of the club’s supporters are planning a series of protests before the clash at Old Trafford.

A banner has been made in United’s famous red, white and black colours bearing the message: “Female Fans Demand No Greenwood Return – End Violence Against Women.”

United earlier this week failed to include Greenwood in their provisional squad numbers list ahead of the new campaign.
