Manchester United sent Premier League title omen as Red Devils look to extend brilliant record during opening weekend against Wolves

Manchester United are set to get their 2023/24 Premier League campaign up and running against Wolves on Monday.

The Red Devils are looking to build on their third-place finish from last season and launch a title challenge.

And the fact they are playing the first game of the year on a Monday could be a very good omen for a potential title challenge.

This will be the fifth time in history that United begin their top-flight season on a Monday.

They have gone on to win the title on three of the last four occasions in which they began the campaign on that day.

One season was 1907/08, but the others were 2010/11 and 2012/13.

The only other time they started on a Monday and failed to win the season was in the 1912/13 campaign.

Plus, no side in Premier League history have won more opening fixtures than United.

As it stands, they have won 20 matches on Gameweek One.

But they have lost two of their last three and were beaten 2-1 last season by Brighton.

United haven’t lost consecutive opening games since the 1970s, so Erik ten Hag will be desperate to avoid that when Wolves visit live and exclusively on talkSPORT.

It’s been a tumultuous summer for the Old Gold as Julen Lopetegui has left already and has been replaced by Gary O’Neil, who couldn’t have been handed a harder start.

Ten Hag is likely to hand competitive debuts to Andre Onana and Mason Mount, while Lisandro Martinez is fully fit.

If you look at Arsenal and Man City, you would say a Man United title challenge may still be a season away, but if they get off to a good start, who knows what could happen.

Plus, history is on their side.
