The Fiorentina midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford since starring at the 2022 World Cup with Morocco.

But the Red Devils needed to unload their midfield options to do so, with Fred – who has one year left on his current deal – among those expected to leave, along with Scott McTominay and Donny van de Beek.

Fred featured 56 times for Man United last term, scoring six times and providing six assists.

However, the arrival of Chelsea’s Mason Mount signalled a midfield revamp at Old Trafford, with Fred and McTominay both linked with moves elsewhere as a result.

Last month talkSPORT brought you the news that Amrabat – who helped Fiorentina reach the Europa Conference League final – is hopeful of completing the move to Man United.

United have spent heavily this window – spending an initial £55m on Mount before forking out £47m on goalkeeper Andre Onana, and then £72m on Rasmus Hojlund.

Now, Fred’s impending departure should see the clubs open formal talks to sign the Serie A star.

Amrabat has made 101 appearances for Fiorentina since signing from Club Brugge in 2020.

Meanwhile, Fred has made 213 appearances for Man United since he signed from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2018, scoring 14 goals and providing 19 assists in that time.
