‘I won’t argue with Messi’ – Ange Postecoglou responds to claims about Tottenham star Cristian Romero

Ange Postecoglou says he won’t argue with Lionel Messi over claims that Tottenham’s Cristian Romero is the best defender in the world.

Romero, a World Cup winner alongside Messi last December, was heralded by the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner for his performance in Argentina’s 1-0 win over Ecuador last week.

Messi again took the opportunity to talk up the importance of teammate RomeroAFP

Following the match Messi told reporters: “For me, he is the best defender in the world right now. Amazing performance tonight, man of the match.”

It is not the first time Messi has singled the Tottenham star out for praise after a host of superb displays for both club and country.

That is music to the ears of Spurs boss Postecoglou, who has seen the Argentine grow into a dressing-room leader during his short time in north London.

And Postecoglou admits he won’t oppose Messi’s glowing reference as Romero continues his impressive form.

“I wouldn’t argue with Messi,” Postecoglou exclusively told talkSPORT. “I’ll tell you what, I wouldn’t like to play against him [Romero].

“Most of the boys don’t like to train against him.

“He’s a real competitor and I love that about him.

“Whether it’s training or a game, what you see is what you get with Romero.”

The 25-year-old joined Spurs on an initial loan deal from Italian side Atalanta before making the move permanent in August 2022.

A key part of Argentina’s recent success, Romero partnered former Manchester City defender Nicola Otamendi in the World Cup final and was part of the squad that secured the 2021 Copa America.
