I bought a tracksuit with my first Premier League contract then a Lamborghini, but I had to sell it after scaring my daughter

Gabby Agbonlahor spent his first ever professional contract money on tracksuits and trainers for him and his friends.

Rewind to 2005 and the former Aston Villa striker had risen through the Villans’ academy to sign his first pro deal.

Agbonlahor never hit the heights of what the highest earners out in Saudi Arabia are on, but he made some fun purchases with his wagesGetty

This summer’s transfer window has seen plenty of discussion around the money players can earn in the Saudi Pro League, with numerous Premier League stars making the move to the Middle East.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the league’s highest earner with an eye-watering salary of £177m-a-year.

That’s certainly a far cry from what then-Premier League starlet Agbonlahor was on 18 years ago.

But whilst today’s Saudi stars are splashing the cash on private chefs, incredible homes and jets, Agbonlahor opted for more modest purchases.

“I think I remember when I was 17, or no, I was 18 when I signed my first professional contract,” he told talkSPORT. “I think it was a grand and a half a week.

“I was quite chavvy back then and remember going with my best friend to the Lacoste shop. They used to do these tracksuits with the collars. Me and my friend bought it in three colours. I bought my friend a pair of trainers, brought myself a few pairs of Nike TNs.

“But I just remember when the money hit my account with the sign on fee from that contract. I just thought ‘shopping time’.”

Upgrading his wardrobe wasn’t the only thing Gabby got with his new salary, either.

Agbonlahor became Aston Villa’s all-time top scorer with 86 goals, which afforded him super cars like a Lamborghini AventadorGetty

Gabby upgraded his pay day purchases from clothes to sports cars

“Then I got a new car. I remember I getting a Golf, bought it off my friend’s dad,” as he recalled the sudden ability to buy what he wanted.

“It was a bit like wow, going from £80-a-week, which was my scholarship deal for two years, to then a grand-and-a-half. I was like wow, what a change.”

Agbonlahor spent his entire career at Aston Villa bar two loans to Watford and Sheffield Wednesday in 2005. He eventually retired in 2018, but his 13 years in his boyhood club’s first team saw him earn much higher salaries than his first professional one.

Gabby has already told us all about his holidays to Miami and other stunning destinations around the world during his career.

But his most extravagant purchase would have set him back at leasr £200,000.

“I think it was a Lamborghini Aventador,” he recalled, though said it didn’t last long.

“I remember scaring my little daughter with it,” he said laughing as he remembered the surprise on her face when the super car’s engine revved.

“I think she was probably three or four, bless her. I was scaring her, she was crying in the car.

“It was fast. But then I only had it for nine months because the weather’s not right in England. There’s a lot of speed bumps. You can’t drive them sort of cars in the weather we get.”

We wonder how many Lambos Gabby would’ve bought if he’d have been banging in goals in Saudi Arabia…
