Gary Neville questions ‘strange’ VAR camera angle as Arsenal star Gabriel Martinelli has goal disallowed at Everton

Gary Neville was left ‘confused’ how Arsenal’s opening goal at Everton was not allowed to stand after Gabriel Martinelli’s strike was ruled out by VAR.

The Brazilian appeared to have put the Gunners in front with a tidy finish from Fabio Vieira’s slick through-ball, only to have it chalked off – but Neville could not see why.

Arsenal’s celebrations were halted when referee Simon Hooper signalled the strike was being looked at by officials at Stockley Park, with the dreaded ‘VAR check’ signs appearing on screens at Goodison Park.

Martinelli appeared onside from Vieira’s perfect defence-splitting pass, but the goal appeared to be ruled out for a pass in the build-up.

Gabriel Magalhaes’ sideways pass inside his own half was intercepted by Everton striker Beto, with the ball deflecting to Eddie Nketiah, who was deemed to have been a toenail offside, before the ball fell to goal creator Vieira.

It appeared a dubious call, with the VAR checks only showing one angle of the event before a decision was made.

And Neville was not convinced.

“Is there no better angle than that?” the Manchester United legend asked on Sky Sports.

“That one looks a little strange, shall we say.

“There are that many camera angles in the ground, I can’t imagine why we don’t have a better one than that.

“Even I’m a little confused!”

“It looks to me to be a little bit of guesswork.

“Even I’m a little confused, he [Martinelli] looked well behind.

“We saw one a few weeks ago where Erik ten Hag complained about not having the correct camera angle to have it in line.

“That one looks a bit strange, shall we say.”

“Sometimes you get a feeling a decision isn’t right and that one [Martinelli’s disallowed goal] didn’t feel right.”
