Fans furious as Newcastle beat Brentford courtesy of Callum Wilson’s penalty following Anthony Gordon’s ‘dive’

Newcastle ended their three-match losing streak by beating Brentford 1-0 in a match shrouded by controversy.

Callum Wilson‘s 64th minute penalty proved to be the only goal of the game, though the decision to award the spot-kick has been slammed online.

Referee Craig Pawson pointed to the spot after being of the opinion that Anthony Gordon was fouled by Bees goalkeeper Mark Flekken.

The English winger went to ground after Flekken raced out of his goal to close the ex-Everton man down.

Gordon was going nowhere with the ball going out of play, but hit the deck after receiving contact from the Netherlands international.

The incident went to VAR, with replays showing that there appeared to be minimal contact, though Pawson stuck with his initial decision.

And Wilson duly dispatched from 12 yards out as he fired his shot into the top right corner.

Social media was sent into meltdown over Flekken’s foul, with many believing that Gordon conned the match official.

Even Newcastle legend Alan Shearer insisted that it was harsh on Brentford, as he tweeted: “Ffs man. Weak weak decision. Never a foul.”

He added: “For what it’s worth I didn’t think that was a pen either.”

Shearer’s ex-Blackburn striking partner Chris Sutton also weighed in, as he posted a GIF of a woman diving into the sea.

Fans were also quick to criticise Gordon, as one user said: “That’s such a horrible dive by Anthony Gordon, no way that’s a penalty.”

Another remarked: “Absolute shocker of a dive from Anthony Gordon, why are we not surprised. Someone seriously needs to have a word with him.”

A third added: “Is that Anthony Gordon conning the ref again? Has no intention to go for the ball. Biggest cheat in Prem.”

This supporter then commented: “Anthony Gordon that is a dive. Runs into the goalkeeper to buy contact.”

Meanwhile this fan simply stated: “Are you joking? There’s no way that’s a penalty on Anthony Gordon.”

Newcastle held on for the victory against Brentford to claim their first win since the opening day of the Premier League season.

The result lifts them up to 11th in the table, while Brentford remain a place ahead in tenth spot.
