Erik ten Hag says Mason Greenwood’s potential Man United return won’t distract players

Manchester United’s players will not allow themselves to be distracted by news of Mason Greenwood’s potential return.

The 21-year-old has not played for the club since he was arrested in January 2022 after being charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and assault.

Greenwood denied all the charges and they were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February.

United released a statement on Wednesday confirming they have carried out a ‘thorough investigation’ into the allegations.

talkSPORT understands staff at the club have been told to prepare for the potential return of Greenwood, who still has two years left on his contract at Old Trafford.

A final decision on his future is set to be made imminently but when asked if the situation around the player and the ongoing takeover saga concerns him, manager Ten Hag told media it doesn’t.

“We focus on way of play, we focus on team performance,” he said during his pre-match press conference on Friday ahead of their weekend trip to White Hart Lane.

“It’s about the players who are available. And so, we’re focusing now on Tottenham Hotspur.

“And every start of the season is difficult. We know that. We are really aware of it, so we had the start [against Wolves].

“We know the performance was not what we hoped, but we want [to win] and it showed the character and the personality and that is one of the things we had to step up in, according to last season.”

Greenwood’s last appearance for the club was in January 2022 during their 1-0 win over West Ham.

United now head into their clash away at Spurs on Saturday night off the back of a narrow 1-0 win over Wolves.

It was a match fuelled with controversy after Wolves were not awarded a late penalty despite Andre Onana wiping out Sasa Kalajdzic in the box.

Hosts Spurs will arrive at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium following a 2-2 draw away at Brentford last weekend.
