David Moyes quizzed on Jesse Lingard return to West Ham live on talkSPORT
David Moyes has spoken to talkSPORT about the possibility of Jesse Lingard rejoining West Ham on a permanent deal.
The midfielder spent time on loan at the London Stadium during the 2020/21 campaign and was a revelation, scoring nine goals and contributing six assists in 16 appearances.
Moyes has left the door open for Lingard to return to the clubgetty
Lingard returned to parent club Manchester United that summer, before joining Nottingham Forest in 2022, despite having interest from West Ham.
But after a disappointing year under Steve Cooper, Lingard became a free agent after leaving the City Ground in the summer.
While the 30-year-old is currently without a club, Moyes has confirmed that the midfielder has been training with his team since August and has not ruled out the prospect of him earning a contract.
Speaking on The Sports Breakfast show with Ally McCoist and Andy Townsend, Moyes said: “Jesse has trained with us for three weeks and he’s improved greatly from when he first came in.
“He’s in really good condition – much better condition than he was when he first came in.
“I have to say, when Jesse joined us two years ago I think he scored nine goals in 15 games and was probably the difference between us getting into Europe for the first time.
“I want to give him every opportunity to get himself back in condition and see how he does.
“So there’s no real update on it at the moment, just to say that he’s back and getting much closer to the levels of fitness where you’d hope he would be.”
Moyes has been delighted with West Ham’s start to the season as he joined talkSPORT live on Tuesday
West Ham are unbeaten in four Premier League games this season, and have wins against Brighton, Chelsea and Luton on the board.
“It’s been a brilliant start for us,” said Moyes.
“We only finished on June 7, we gave the boys extra time off.
“We had booked a trip to Australia which meant we only had three days back before we flew to Australia. So in truth our pre-season was really bog average compared to what you’d maybe expect. But in football you never know how it’s going to work.
“We got some players in a bit later but the boys that have come in have been great and the way we have started has given us real confidence – we have won a couple of really big games.”
Moyes also spoke to talkSPORT about West Ham’s Europa Conference League triumph and Scotland vs England on Tuesday night. Watch the interview in full above.
