Harry Maguire has received a text message of support from England and Manchester United legend David Beckham.

The Red Devils and Three Lions defender has been on the receiving end of heavy criticism following his performances for club and country.

It has become a long-running theme for Maguire, but the scrutiny intensified over the last week following his appearances for England during the international break, as he scored an own goal in the 3-1 win over Scotland.

The centre-back’s family have condemned the abuse in a statement, whilst talkSPORT’s Gabby Agbonlahor, Gareth Southgate and other figures in football have stood up for him.

Ex-Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan also said Maguire should look to former footballer Beckham as a source of inspiration to drown out the hate.

Now, Beckham himself has sent a message of support to the defender.

According to The Sun, a source said: “Becks told Harry to keep his head up.

“He knows what it’s like to be targeted. He got through it and is certain Harry can do the same. Getting a message from someone like Becks meant the world to Harry.”

The former England captain also told Maguire to ignore the trolls, as well as praising him for how he’s conducted himself in the face of the ridicule.

Beckham himself endured heavy backlash from fans and the media for getting sent off in the 1998 World Cup against Argentina, and knows all too well about facing criticism.

Fans were even burning effigies of the iconic free-kick taker, but he soon overcame that by doing his talking on the pitch.

Responding to the abuse he received at the Scotland game, Maguire said: “We knew it would be hostile against the Scots and in the second half I got most of it. I am happy to go with that, don’t worry.

“They piled pressure on myself. I wouldn’t say I’m used to it but I can deal with it.”
