Manchester City get their Premier League campaign underway on Friday night against Burnley in the league’s opening match of the season.

Pep Guardiola’s side played their first competitive match of the season last weekend as they lost on penalties to Arsenal in the Community Shield after a 1-1 draw in 90 mins.

Leandro Trossard cancelled out Cole Palmer’s opener with a deflected effort in the 11th minute of stoppage time to send the tie to penalties.

Burnley run away with Championship title last season, racking a century of points to finish 10 points clear of second placed Sheffield United and 21 clear of Luton in third.

Vincent Kompany hit the ground running in his first coaching job in English football, taking over a newly relegated side to introduce a whole new style of play, and take the Championship by storm.

Many are predicting the Clarets to have a strong season this time around, and will look to build on their highly impressive home form last season in which they lost just once in all competitions, that defeat coming late in the season when promotion was already secured.

Friday’s match will also be notable due to Burnley’s manager having spent 11 years as a player with Manchester City, captaining the club to four Premier League titles and winning a further seven domestic trophies with the club.

The two teams did meet last season in the FA Cup quarter finals in which Man City won 6-0 at home thanks to an Erling Haaland hat trick, which means City have now won all of the last 11 matches against Burnley, and are unbeaten against the Clarets since 2015.
