Ben Chilwell laughed at by James Maddison and Raheem Sterling after moment which shocked Jamie Carragher

It takes a lot to shock Jamie Carragher, but Ben Chilwell did just that on Friday night.

Chelsea won their first home match since March with a 3-0 victory over Luton, but captain-on-the-night Chilwell had a moment to forget.

With the Blues leading by a single goal in the second-half, the left-back found himself inside the opposition box and one-on-one with the goalkeeper, albeit on his weaker right foot.

Chilwell bizarrely chose to attempt a pass to teammate Raheem Sterling, which appeared more difficult to execute than a shot at goal.

With three defenders on the cover, the pass failed to reach its intended target and a collective groan around Stamford Bridge told the 26-year-old he made a terrible mistake.

Speaking on commentary, Liverpool legend Carragher said: “I can’t believe what I’ve just seen. It’s awful. It really is. Such poor decision-making.”

Chilwell made light of the mishap in an Instagram post after the match – and so did his Premier League mates.

The Chelsea defender wrote: “Absolute honour to lead the boys out tonight at the Bridge. Ps. Shooting practise for me tomorrow.”

Tottenham star and England teammate James Maddison was among those to comment with a piece of constructive criticism.

Maddison wrote: “You don’t need to practice shooting bro, you need to practice deciding to shoot.”

Maddison saw the funny side

And so did Sterling

Even Sterling, who grabbed two goals and an assist in the resounding win over the Hatters, was surprised Chilwell decided to send the ball his way.

“I would’ve shot,” Sterling joked in response to Chilwell’s post.
