Andre Onana spotted at airport as Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United rebuild takes another step
Andre Onana has been seen at the airport as he gets closer to his move to Manchester United. The Red Devils have reached an agreement for a £47 million transfer fee for the goalkeeper, who will take over as Man United’s number one, replacing David de Gea.
Onana was spotted exiting a mini-van on Tuesday evening, accompanied by his partner. They headed straight for the departure gate upon arrival at the Caselle Airport in Turin, where they are expected to board a private flight. The medical examination is scheduled to take place on Wednesday.
Once the medical is completed, Onana, who is set to sign a five-year contract with Man United, will join his new teammates on their pre-season tour of the USA. This move will reunite him with Man United manager Erik ten Hag, with whom he previously worked at Ajax.
Ten Hag specifically targeted Onana as a priority signing, allowing De Gea to leave the club on a free transfer after his 12-year tenure. Additionally, it is understood that Man United will sell backup goalkeeper Dean Henderson to Nottingham Forest for a fee of £20 million.
If all goes according to plan, Onana could potentially make his debut for Man United in their pre-season match against Arsenal in New York on Friday. The rest of their tour includes matches against Wrexham, Real Madrid, and Borussia Dortmund. They will conclude their preparations for the new season with games against Lens at Old Trafford and Athletic Bilbao in Dublin.
Onana, at 27 years old, will be Man United’s third signing of the summer, following the acquisitions of Mason Mount from Chelsea for £55 million and the re-signing of former player Jonny Evans on a short-term contract.
In addition to Onana, Man United is also pursuing Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund. However, negotiations between the two clubs have currently reached a deadlock.
The Manchester United rebuild under manager Erik ten Hag appears to have taken another step, as Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana was seen at the Manchester airport yesterday.
The 24-year-old recently had his four-year ban from UEFA competitions overturned on appeal. As the Cameroon international inches closer to his potential transfer with Manchester United, it appears that the club’s transfer activities are kicking into high gear.
The arrival of the Cameroon international would be a major addition to the Red Devils’ ranks, and it could signal the beginning of the end of the much troubled David de Gea era at Old Trafford. The Spanish international’s performance has been inconsistent over the past few seasons and he has seen his once glowing reputation tarnished.
Onana’s potential arrival would not only benefit the Manchester United defense, but it would also create competition between the two goalkeepers; something that ten Hag clearly considers important for a functional squad. Onana has an impressive record in the Dutch Eredivisie and the Champions League, and his presence may be needed to finally push United back into contention for the Premier League title.
Onana’s transfer should be a good move for the Manchester-based club, as well as the player himself. The Cameroon international is heading into the prime of his career, and his potential new manager has already expressed his confidence in him. For now, the transfer appears to be just a step away from becoming official.
